MLB investigates suspected Astros cheating in ALCS Game 1

Major League Baseball acknowledged Tuesday night after Game 3 of the American League Championship Series that it had investigated an incident three nights earlier, in which a Houston Astros employee was spotted in the camera well adjacent to the Boston Red Sox dugout at Fenway Park and reportedly aiming a camera into the dugout. Nevertheless, Eovaldi, whom the Red Sox acquired from the Rays in late July, gave up only two runs on six hits and two walks, striking out four - four more than Astros starter Dallas Keuchel, who allowed two runs in five innings. The employee, reported by Yahoo's Jeff Passan to be Kyle McLaughlin, was said to be pointing a small camera into the Boston dugout.

MLB's statement confirms McLaughlin, the Astros employee, was monitoring the other team's dugout to ensure they were not violating any rules. On that note sign stealing is a common practice in baseball, and somewhat easily done due to the down time in games that allow for keen observation. And we don't get caught up in the whole paranoia thing [with] the signs. The incident isn't expected to amount to anything more than a fine for Houston, according to a report from ESPN.

"I'm aware of something going on, but I haven't been briefed", Hinch said.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who served as bench coach for the Astros last season, also addressed the topic.

"I'm always concerned about [sign-stealing] throughout the season", Cora said after the game.

Sign-stealing has been an issue all series.

The Red Sox, Indians and Astros either declined comment or said Major League Baseball was handling the matter.

The two teams went back and forth throughout the game, with Boston taking an early 3-1 lead before a George Springer blast and Josh Reddick single tied it up in the third. The Red Sox, for example, were seen calling out Luis Severino's pitches during the ALDS.

After the Indians lost the American League Division Series to the Astros in a three-game sweep last week, Cleveland said a man was seen with a cellphone standing by the photographer's pit at Progressive Field, the Indians' home park, October 8.

The Red Sox Game 3 win in Houston lasted almost four hours, which is long for a baseball game, although postseason contests are often so lengthy.
