B.C. asked to conserve energy after pipeline explosion

Gas prices are set to rise across the Pacific Northwest over the coming week because of a pipeline explosion in Prince George, Canada, according to GasBuddy.

A gas pipeline blast on Tuesday, northeast of Prince George, shut down the Enbridge natural gas pipeline about 600 miles northeast of Vancouver and could cut off flow to Washington State. Turn off your furnace if you can.

"We can actually use oil for probably the next 24 hours or so and continue to run our operations, but after that things become more complex", said Harmac president Levi Sampson. An adjacent 30-inch pipeline was also depressurized for safety.

The pipeline is part of the T-South system, stretching over 1,000 kilometres from Chetwynd, B.C., to the USA border, which is why it impacts gas distribution across the province and into Washington.

Enbridge earlier said it was maintaining a 1 km (0.6 mile) evacuation zone around the site and was working with regulators on investigating the cause of the incident. "I just chose to get out".

Doug Stout, vice-president of market development with FortisBC, said the Lower Mainland could see a four to eight-cent jump in gas prices as a result of the possible shortage. That's more than two-thirds of the company's customer base.

"We can advise the fire on the pipeline has been extinguished, the line has been isolated and fully depressurized, Barnes said".

"FortisBC is asking BCIT to urgently limit natural gas usage", read the message from the school.

The province's Ministry of Environment later confirmed the incident involved a 900 PSI gas line operated by Enbridge. Combined, they supply 85 per cent of all natural gas used province-wide.

The institution sent an email to students last night warning that "building heating will be very limited on the north side of BCIT Burnaby Campus".

"We don't know what caused this explosion yet but once we do know, no doubt there will be some lessons to be learned and we will be implementing those as regulators". "If we are not able to use natural gas, we will probably have to curtail or take some down time".
