Banky's secret shredder stunt will only raise prices for his work

Here is how Banksy shredded a painting worth £1million

Here is how Banksy shredded a painting worth £1million

So it's not entirely surprising that one of his most famous paintings, Girl With Balloon, selfdestructed after selling for more than $1.86 million at a Sotheby's auction in London.

A post on Banksy's official Instagram account showed the moment - and the shocked reaction of those in the room - with the words "Going, going, gone".

"It appears we just got Banksy-ed", said Alex Branczik, Sotheby's head of contemporary art for Europe, in a press release accompanied by photos of the freakish episode.

The Banksy painting that self-destructed after being sold for $1.1 million has reportedly doubled in value after the controversial stunt. In 2006 Banksy is known to have visited the wall, and this painting is amongst others that appeared on the wall as a sign of protest, resistance, and of course hope.

In this undated photo provided by Sotheby's the spray-painted canvas "Girl with Balloon" by artist Banksy is pictured.

However, when Banksy does something insane like shredding his own artwork, it will naturally have a dramatic affect on values.

A few years back he published an image on his website mocking an auction house and their clients for bidding for the framed words "I can't believe you morons actually buy this sh*t".

According to the study conducted MyArtBroker.com, 52 percent of people think Banksy is a collective of individuals, all using his trademark tag on their work. "In many cases, if you remove the frame you violate the artist's wishes and destroy the artwork", the statement added.

The auction house said it was "in discussion about next steps" with the buyer, whose identity was not disclosed.

Never had we seen such a scene during an auction.

Another film of the auction appears to have captured the artist himself videoing the artwork being shredded.

However, it will perhaps now be worth even more now, going down in history as one of the art work's greatest ever pranks. We have not experienced this situation the past... where a painting spontaneously shredded, upon achieving a record for the artist.

It's unclear how Banksy pulled off the stunt, but there is suspicion that maybe it was some type of remote that activated the shredding at the precise moment the hammer hit closing the auction sale.

In anonymous interviews, Banksy has cited Del Naja as an influence - and he is credited as being the first graffiti artist in Bristol.
