Tragedy Waco Tank closed as CDC tests for “brain eating amoeba.” By Chas Smith 6 hours ago

The 29-year-old man died in New Jersey in September after falling ill with Naegleria fowleri.

Stabile had used the park's wave pool while on vacation, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald.

Stabile died at the Atlantic City Medical Center in New Jersey on September 21, days after returning home from Texas, NJ.com reported.

An obituary for Stabile describes him as an "avid outdoorsman" who "loved snowboarding, surfing, and anything to do with friends and family".

You can not be infected with Naegleria fowleri by drinking contaminated water and the amoeba is not found in salt water.

BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort is closed while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tests for Naegleria fowleri, a rare but highly deadly amoeba, CBS affiliate KBTX-TV reports. Officials are investigating the source.

Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba which is a single-celled living organism.

"Our hearts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the New Jersey surf community during this hard time", BSR Cable Park owner Stuart E. Parsons Jr. said in a statement to the Waco Tribune-Herald.

Infection typically occurs when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwater places, like lakes and rivers.

The Waco McLennan County Public Health District said that the CDC tested water at BSR and that results from the test would come out later this week.

"Our hearts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the New Jersey surf community during this hard time", Parsons said. The fatality rate, however, is more than 97%, with just four people surviving of the 143 reported infections in the United States between 1962 and 2017.

Normally, people are infected when contaminated water enters through their nose, according to the agency. "BSR Surf Resort operates a state-of-the-art artificial man-made wave".
