Global average temperature on the rise - IPCC

Scientists call for $2.4tr shift from coal to renewables

The Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) declared it had "high confidence" in its predictions. There are still clearly huge changes and challenges ahead in the expected energy transition away from fossil fuels and storage of renewable energy.

"The world needs a "Plan B" to address climate change".

That's the warning from one high profile regulator. "The risk to those investments is that markets and governments will move aggressively to decarbonize the economy, in which case the value of those assets could drop significantly". The Paris pact aims to limit the global average temperature rise to "well below" 2℃ mark (above the pre-industrial level) while aiming to limit it at 1.5℃.

THE world must reduce greenhouse-gas emissions to "net zero" by 2050 if global warming is to be limited to 1.5ºC, a new report from the world's leading scientists has said.

In a report recently published by the United Nations' (UN) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it predicted a bleak future for the entire world with increasing food shortages and large masses of coral reefs dying off within the next 22 years.

Keeping the 1.5C target would keep the global sea level rise 0.1 meter (3.9 inches) lower by 2100 than a 2C target, the report states.

Allowing the global temperature to temporarily exceed or "overshoot" 1.5 °C would mean a greater reliance on techniques that remove Carbon dioxide from the air to return global temperature to below 1.5 °C by 2100.

While warming of 2C above pre-industrial levels has widely been thought of as the threshold beyond which risky climate change will occur, vulnerable countries such as low-lying island states warn rises above 1.5C will threaten their survival.

India hadn't made any scientific contribution - in terms of modelling possible climate change-impact to its agriculture, monsoon, urban dwellings - to this report but gave critical inputs to the scientific basis underlying these assessments.

What is significant about 1.5C of warming?

That's not lost on Jones.

Jones a year ago established the Carbon Risk Initiative, a database that includes information on the amount of oil, gas, coal and utilities investments held by insurance companies, and whether the insurers have divested from thermal coal, the amount of thermal coal divested and any future commitments to divest.

"Parties and governments that actually understand the science and believe in action need to be more courageous than they're being", he said.

Jones' has continued to harp that insurers must act soon, despite indications in past reports that the real effects of climate change are a ways off.

But they asked the IPCC to complete a report on the feasibility to limiting hikes following a request from small island nations. In short, as there is no planet B, saving our planet Earth should be our number one mission.

"It also means adapting to the growing impacts of climate change that are felt here, particularly to the increasing flood risks from heavy rainfall and from sea level rise along our coasts".

For a good recent example of society reacting quickly to a perceived threat or wrong look at plastic straws. "This is the message we will take to Katowice", the Commission said. And then the second part of it was what you would need to do to get down emissions and what kind of changes to society, technology would be needed to achieve that kind of goal. That means, she said, electrifying everything.

EU Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete and Research, Science and Innovation Commissioner Carlos Moedas welcomed the report by the United Nations body, which provides policy-makers across the globe with a strong scientific basis for their efforts to modernise the economy, tackle climate change, promote sustainable development and eradicate poverty. "It's about speed and scale now".

Jones believes it can it be done.
