Google is Shutting Down Google+, Admits Low Consumer Adoption

A bug in Google+ exposed the data of hundreds of thousands. Google covered it

A vulnerability in the Google+ social network exposed the personal data of "hundreds of thousands" of people using the site between 2015 and March 2018, according to a report Monday by the Wall Street Journal. And an internal memo noted that while there wasn't any evidence of misuse on behalf of developers, there wasn't a way to know for sure whether any misuse took place. "We found no evidence that any developer was aware of this bug, or abusing the API, and we found no evidence that any Profile data was misused", the company said.

The Google+ flaw could have allowed 438 external apps to scoop up user names, email addresses, occupations, gender and age without authorization. In the aftermath of what appears to have been a major security flaw within Google+, the company ended up not disclosing the breach of information to its users.

Information that could be accessed did not include posts, messages or telephone numbers, a spokesperson said.

Google's failed attempt at a social media platform, Google+, will soon be coming to an end.

A software bug was discovered that gave developers access to private profile data of over 500,000 users. Google neglected to report the breach to the public, allegedly out of fear that the company would face regulations and damage to its reputation, according to sources and documents obtained by the Wall Street Journal. Google CEO Sundar Pichai was allegedly briefed on the company's plan not to notify users about the bug.

That fiasco had raised questions about the privacy practices of other big tech firms, including Google.

Google has already drawn controversy over its data collection practices.

The search giant states that it wasn't able to maintain "a successful Google+ product that meets consumers' expectations".

90 per cent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds, the company said.

. Infact even after massive investments and development Google+ didn't gain huge popularity among users.

In addition, Google Play will limit which apps are allowed to ask for permission to access a user's phone and SMS data.

"Only apps directly enhancing email functionality - such as email clients, email backup services and productivity services (e.g., CRM and mail merge services) - will be authorised to access this data", Smith added.
