Made of "sleek, durable polycarbonate", aka plastic, the case is essentially see-through, with a "self-healing coating" keeping things looking fresh at all times and flawless pairing with both black and black & white Pixel 2 XL variants.

For the Titan M in the latest Pixel smartphones, Google explained on Wednesday, there's that same root of trust, ensuring the device starts up an operating system that hasn't been tampered with by malware or hackers, and is cryptographically signed off by Google.

Furthermore, the company released a blog post breaking down how Titan M protects users. The bootloader refers to the software that validates and loads Android when you turn on your phone.

Google uses the Titan M chip in their "Verified Boot", a secure boot process that Google first started playing with in Android 4.4, but implemented as Android Verified Boot a year ago in Android Oreo. The firmware on the Titan M can only be updated with a successful passcode attempt. The chip is also built into the authentication passcode process, preventing too many unsuccessful login attempts when it senses that an attacker may be trying to gain access to the phone. Additionally, Titan M will decrypt the phone only after it has successfully verified your password. But on the other hand, this makes it much harder to open. This is in addition to Google's own Pay service. This means malicious actors can't try to flash fake firmware to Titan M to bypass its security.

The chip isn't just for Google though, with the Titan M chip able to "protect third-party apps and secure sensitive transactions" thanks to the new StrongBox KeyStore APIs in Android 9. These security advantages will help in secure transactions on smartphones, including funds transfers and e-voting, to name a few.

Overall, it's a significant investment in security for Google.
