Here's how much fast food Americans are eating

Study 1 in 3 U.S. adults eat fast food each day

Almost 45% of those between the ages of 20 and 39 eat fast food each day, but just 24.1% of those aged 60 and over do the same.

But despite public health campaigns, new figures released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that 37 percent of United States adults are not taking the message to heart.

"Other studies that have looked at 24-hour dietary recall like this have found a similar thing: that about a third of kids on any given day eat fast food", Harris said. And among high-income families (those with incomes above 350 percent of the poverty line), 42 percent dined on fast food on a typical day. Men tended to eat more fast food than women, Fryar's group said.

"We focused on fast food for this report because fast food has played an important role in the American diet in recent decades", Fryer said.

"There is no reason to completely avoid fast food, but it shouldn't be consumed regularly", she said. Among men and women who consumed fast food, a higher percentage of men ate it for lunch, while a higher percentage of women ate it as a snack.

Men are more likely to eat fast food at lunch, according to the CDC, but women tend to eat fast food as a snack more often than men.

The mainstays of take-outs - processed meat, sweetened bread, fried food and fatty sauces - are linked to chronic health conditions such as diabetes and heart failure, the number one killer in the world.

For example, while about 32 percent of lower-income folks ate fast food daily, more than 36 percent of middle-income consumers had fast food on a given day, as did 42 percent of those with higher incomes, the report found.

"On average, they'd gone 2½ - actually 2.4 - times per week".

That 91% was an increase from 79% of 771 parents in a 2010 survey and 83% of 835 parents in a 2013 survey, according to the Rudd Center report. But "what we should be scared of is double cheeseburgers, french fries and large amounts of sugary beverages". "So all of those are driving purchases of fast food", Harris said.

This year, McDonald's announced plans to make kids' Happy Meals healthier, reducing portions and taking steps to cut back on the amount of fat and salt.

A new study has revealed something that shouldn't come as a shock to too many people - Americans love their fast food.

She added that despite fast food establishments saying they're offering healthier options - they merely have the perception of being healthy.

"It is amusing, when we see news clips of a shark swimming near a beach, it scares us into not going near that beach".
