Klobuchar Calls for CDC Investigation of Polio-Like Illness

6 Minnesota kids diagnosed with rare, polio-like disease

The Washington Department of Health is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to confirm if the children have AFM.

All the children showed systems of a respiratory illness the week before developing symptoms of AFM.

Like many children, Julia Payne, the toddler at Lurie, started to show signs of weakness and problems breathing on her own after a prolonged cold, said Dr. Marcelo Malakooti, the medical director for Lurie's pediatric intensive care unit.

At Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, physicians are treating some of the six Minnesota cases.

AFM is a polio-like illness that affects a person's nervous system, including the spinal cord.

Other states have also reported cases.

"At this point there isn't evidence that would point to a single source of illness among these cases", Dr. Scott Lindquist, state infectious disease epidemiologist at the Department of Health, said.

With hope, further investigation will address this unnerving uptick in AFM cases, preventing even more little ones from suffering around the country.

"If their child gets an enteroviral infection, they need to look for symptoms such as sudden onset of arm and leg weakness, difficulty swallowing".

State health officials are working with the care providers to obtain the samples and information to send to CDC for testing and confirmation of the diagnoses.

The cause of AFM, and the reason for the rise in cases starting in 2014, is not known. Since that time, more than 360 new cases of AFM were reported.

Although we are still learning about AFM and its causes, being up to date on all recommended vaccinations is one way to protect yourself and your family from diseases that can cause AFM.

The agency is also warning parents to be vigilant about protecting kids from mosquito bites because of the possible connection between West Nile virus and AFM.

However, 11 of the Colorado cases of AFM have tested positive for EV A71, a rare type of enterovirus not usually seen in the US but instead in Asia and other parts of the world, according to Dr. Rachel Herlihy, the Colorado state epidemiologist.

In 2017, 33 cases were reported in 16 states.

While there is no cure, health experts say you should take preventative measures including washing your hands or coughing into your elbow.
