Marvel and Netflix released a joint statement saying, "Unfortunately, Marvel's Luke Cage will not return for a third season".

Deadline broke the story about Luke Cage's demise, and added several additional details about how the end came about.

Marvel had inked a lucrative deal with Netflix for several series including "Daredevil", "Jessica Jones", "Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist" with a fifth series - "The Punisher" - being added previous year. Today (Oct. 19), Netflix announced that Marvel's Luke Cage will not be returning for a third season. With Luke Cage though, people have generally enjoyed it and we fully expected for the hero to get at least one more season.

Netflix decided on cancellation only after discussions about the possibility of a third season took place, according to an insider that spoke to Variety.

For the second straight week, Netflix has cut down its Marvel roster in considerable fashion.

The series also had a visual and musical flair that numerous other Marvel shows on Netflix don't. Neither Marvel nor Netflix were willing to bend, and it ultimately led to the show's premature cancellation. Luke Cage now cancelled. With the high cost, there has been pressure on the Marvel series to overperform in viewership.

Additionally, Disney, which owns Marvel, is launching its own streaming service, though no plans exist yet to resurrect these shows once that platform launches.

The interpolation of classic rap music is nothing new for the Luke Cage series, last season each episode was named after Gang Starr songs.

Disney has their streaming service coming online soon, and they're wanting to bring everything related to the Marvel banner under their umbrella. However, with the axe swinging, a lack of Daredevil Season 4 would be the clearest indication that the once warm and fuzzy halcyon days between Marvel and Netflix had hit an ice age.
