PSN Name Changes Confirmed, Coming to PlayStation Preview Program Soon

PlayStation announce when you'll be able to change your PSN ID

If you've been itching to change your questionable PlayStation Network name, your chance is coming.

Finally, after months of hints and rumors, Sony has officially announced that the option to change your PSN Online ID is now being tested and will roll out to all PlayStation users in "early 2019" (with earlier testing for members of the PlayStation Preview Program). PSN users will also have the option to show their old ID alongside the new one, to make the transition more visible to online friends. Sony says the feature is "only compatible with PS4 games originally published after April 2018". If users run into any problems with older games after the change, they'll be able to revert to their original name for free as many times as they need. Subsequent name changes will cost money, with it being $4.99 for PlayStation Plus members and $9.99 for everyone else. Initially, it is only going to be available to Sony's "Playstation Preview Program", but the feature is planned to be rolled out for everyone in the new year.

Changes to an online ID can be made through the Settings menu or via the Profile page of a PS4.

More importantly, not every game will play nicely with your new ID.

Unfortunately, not all applications and games for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita are guaranteed to be compatible, and "users may occasionally encounter issues or errors in certain games" after changing their name. This should solve "most" issues. In addition, when this feature officially launches, a list of compatible games published before April 1, 2018, will be provided on PlayStation.com for reference before you make a change.

The preview program is set to go until the end of November 2018, and PlayStation has plans to roll it out for all PS4 players in early 2019.
