Saudi officials must prove claims about missing journalist: Erdogan

Saudi writer 'murdered' in consulate

During a United Nations briefing on Tuesday in Geneva, Shamdasani said that the rights office is urging Turkey and Saudi Arabia to cooperate and conduct an "impartial and independent investigation" into Khashoggi's disappearance in Istanbul, and "to make the findings public".

Mr Trump told reporters he had talked to the Saudi authorities "at the highest level" about Mr Khashoggi. "God willing, we will not face an undesired situation", he told reporters, avoiding confirming claims that the journalist was killed.

"I don't like hearing about it, and hopefully that will sort itself out".

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said the investigation was "continuing intensively", and that the Vienna Convention allowed for consulates to be searched by the authorities of the host country with the consent of the mission chief.

Khashoggi has not been seen since October 2 when he went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain official documents for his upcoming marriage.

Reacting to news of the alleged murder, the journalist's Turkish fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, said on Twitter she "did not believe he has been killed". "The consulate officials can not save themselves by simply saying, 'He has left, '" Erdogan told a news conference in Budapest, where he is on an official visit.

Fears are growing over missing Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi, after Turkish officials said they believed he had been murdered.

Private broadcaster NTV reported on October 9 that all suspects were seen entering the consulate half an hour before Khashoggi and leaving it after nearly three hours.

The Post, citing anonymous US officials familiar with the intelligence, said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered an operation to lure Khashoggi from his home in Virginia to Saudi Arabia and then detain him.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia faced increased scrutiny over Khashoggi's disappearance from officials in America, the kingdom's longtime ally. All 15 left just a few hours later, and Turkey has now identified the roles that most or all of them held in the Saudi government or security services, the unnamed source told the Times.

Saudi officials meant to lure Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia, the Washington Post reported the source as saying, but it was unclear what they meant to do with him - and whether the USA ever warned Khashoggi of the threat he faced.

Recall that in June of past year, several Arab states - including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and United Arab Emirates (UAE) - broke relations with Qatar and imposed an air, sea and land blockade on Qatar.

President Donald Trump says the U.S.is looking into the fate of a Saudi writer missing and feared murdered but expressed reservations over calls to withhold further USA arms sales to Saudi Arabia, warning that such a move "would be hurting us".

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told Bloomberg News last week that Mr Khashoggi had left the building shortly after entering it. Relations were already strained after Turkey sent troops to the Gulf state of Qatar previous year in a show of support after its Gulf neighbors, including Saudi Arabia, imposed an embargo on Doha.

He proposed the Saudi people pave the ground for transferring power to Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, the Saudi King Salman's younger brother who is in exile in Britain, and form a new government based on the constitution.

"We don't like it", Trump said.

He said Turkish authorities were looking into all camera records and monitoring incoming and outgoing airport transits, but added that Turkey would await the results of the prosecutor's investigation.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said national security adviser John Bolton and presidential senior adviser Jared Kushner spoke on Tuesday to Crown Prince Mohammed about Khashoggi.
