‘This Won’t be Subtle’: SpaceX West Coast Launch to Create Large Sonic Boom

- The launch clock remained set to 7:21 p.m. for SpaceX's launch of a satellite into orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base, and planned landing of the rocket booster 100 miles west of Los Angeles.

"This is great news for everyone here at SpaceX", Tom Praderio, a SpaceX firmware engineer, said during live launch commentary tonight.

SpaceX has just successfully landed its first rocket on the U.S. West Coast.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried an Argentinian Earth-observation satellite into space Sunday and for the first time landed a first-stage booster back at its California launch site.

The rocket being used in Sunday's mission was previously employed in a June launch.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to warn Californians what was in store for them.

But Sunday's flight marked the first time SpaceX attempted a landing at Vandenberg, a milestone made possible by extensive environmental and safety studies that concluded the noise and possible aftermath of a failure would not cause any significant damage or harm to area wildlife.

The upgraded Block 5 Falcon 9 is part of SpaceX's plan for vastly cheaper and more efficient spaceflight.

The satellite is the first of two for Argentina's space agency. SpaceX's landing record now stands at 30 successful booster recoveries, 11 at Cape Canaveral, one at Vandenberg and 18 on droneships. The mission will also help planners and emergency-management officials keep tabs on wildfires, floods and other disasters. The second satellite will be SAOCOM 1B.

"SAOCOM" is short for "Satélite Argentino de Observación Con Microondas", which is Spanish for "Argentine Microwave-Observation Satellite".
