Svitolina may not reach the Final of the WTA tournament in Singapore

Simona Halep of Romania returns to Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands during the finals at the Western & Southern Open tennis tournament in Mason Ohio. Halep is back as the year-end No. 1 for the second

After a slump at the start of the year, Sloane Stephens managed to change her fortunes and consolidate her position in the top-10 of the rankings with several performances, and her breakthrough on clay which saw her reach the final of Roland Garros.

Halep used a wildcard to make her return from a back injury in Moscow ahead of the WTA Finals next week and will come up against Pavlyuchenkova, a 7-5, 6-4 victor on Monday.

For the first time in her career, USA tennis player Sloane Stephens has qualified for the upcoming WTA Finals, the season ending, eight-woman tournament to be held in Singapore, the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) announced on Sunday.

World No.46 Tomljanovic was beaten 7-5 6-4 by Russian Pavlyuchenkova, who will face top ranked Simon Halep in the second round.

"I haven't practised 100 per cent yet but today, tomorrow, I will do close to 100", Halep said in a conference call, "and I will be able to know better the next day".

"If I can't play here, I'm very doubtful that I will be able to play in Singapore. To do it for a second time in 2018 feels like a special achievement, especially having also won my first Grand Slam this year", Halep said in a statement made available by the WTA.

Dealing with a herniated disc, Halep is in Moscow this week to test out her back and get some match prep before Singapore. She has been at the top of the rankings for almost the entire year even though her results suffered as the season wore on.

Halep has played 15 tournaments so far in 2018. "The back is always hard, but I have to accept it and to look forward".

Djokovic overtook Switzerland's Roger Federer in the standings, pushing him down to third.
