A New Jersey surfer is dead after contracting a rare and deadly "brain-eating amoeba" weeks after he swam at a water resort in Texas.

The Waco Tribune-Herald reports Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is testing BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort for Naegleria fowleri, a rare but highly deadly ameba colloquially known as a "brain-eating amoeba".

Parsons said his resort's wave pool is in compliance with the CDC's "guidelines and recommendations concerning Naegleria fowleri".

"When Stabile returned to New Jersey. he reported a sudden severe headache while mowing the lawn".

Stabile was sedated after showing symptoms - brain swelling and a fever - consistent with bacterial meningitis but didn't respond to treatment.

Only four people out of 143 infected in the United States between 1962 and 2017 have survived, according to the CDC.

The contaminated water enters swimmers and divers' bodies through the nose, and then travels to the brain where it causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).

The amoeba is typically found in fresh water, especially warmer water such as lakes, rivers and hot springs. "Even so, this drug is not easily accessible", Stabile's friend wrote.

The CDC has already collected water samples and is seeking to have results by the end of the week.

Stuart Parsons, the park owner, said in a statement that it will remain closed until the testing is completed.

According to the Associated Press, Fabrizio Stabile had visited BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort soon before his death.

Stabile's family have launched a GoFundMe for the Fabrizio Stabile Foundation for Naegleria Fowleri Awareness, in hopes of educating more people about the infection.

Twenty-nine-year-old Fabrizio "Fab" Stabile passed away at the Atlantic City Medical Center on Friday, September 21 after a brief fight with the bug.

In light of Stabile's death, officials at the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District are troubleshooting to find the source of the amoeba.
