Reporter ridicules Trump’s embrace of Kanye: ‘Laughable’ to treat him as an ambassador from the black community

Trump welcomed West to the White House on Thursday afternoon, saying the rapper "has been a friend for a long time".

Vivian Salama, a White House correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, who was in the room for the meeting of the minds, tweeted that at one point West ran up to Trump to give him a hug, and also said that, as president, Trump has to be "the freshest" and "the flyest".

The White House said they will talk about manufacturing, prison reform, preventing gang violence and reducing violence in Chicago, where West grew up.

West replied: "It was from the soul. He gets it." He also joked that he could be a good presidential candidate to which Kanye responded, "Only after 2024".

Trump added that West could "speak for me any time he wants".

Other music industry representatives that will attend the signing include Neil Portnow, the Recording Academy CEO, RIAA president Mitch Glazier, and vocal Trump supporter Kid Rock.

In an interview with Fox News before the meeting, Trump said the justice system was "very unfair to African-Americans it's very unfair to everybody".

He continued, "What I need Saturday Night Live to improve on, or what I need the liberals to improve on - if he don't look good, we don't look good. You make a Superman cape for me", he gushed at Trump, who was sitting with his desk between him and Kanye, and seemed happier for it.

West, who received harsh criticism for suggesting slavery was a "choice, " told Trump that "we have to release the love [throughout] the country. we don't have the reparations but we have the 13th Amendment".

However, in front of reporters, West went off on a litany of subjects, including how his "Make America Great Again" hat makes him feel like Superman.

Trump claims Kanye West as a friend and a "different kind of a guy" whose big following in the African-American community helped boost his approval ratings. "I'm talking about the it-will-never-happens of the world, people in high school told you things would never happen".
