Trump Threatens Military Response to Asylum Seekers

Trump calls for military action at Mexican border to halt immigrant caravan — which he blames on Democrats

President Donald Trump has threatened to call in the military to seal off the US" southern border with Mexico, unless the Mexico takes action to halt a "caravan' of migrants making its way to the U.S. from Central America.

It would take several weeks for the group to travel to the USA border.

President Donald Trump took a break from defending the Saudi royal family, believed to have ordered the execution of a WaPo columnist, to whip up his base before the midterm elections with some good old fashioned Twitter fear mongering. Trump in April authorized the National Guard to protect the border as a similar group of migrants headed up from Central America.

President Donald Trump on Thursday morning accused Democrats of orchestrating an illegal immigrant "assault on our country".

"Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught at their Northern Border", he wrote.

President Trump continued by saying ceasing the flow of drug and criminals into the U.S.is more important than global trade. And it is also true that previous migrant flows have already exhausted our government's resources for detaining asylum-seekers and processing their claims (although, this is partly because the Trump administration refuses to expand alternatives to mass detention, largely out of a principled commitment to treating migrants with wanton cruelty).

The president's warning echoes an earlier tweet on Wednesday, in which he again blasted Democrats for refusing to approve tighter border control and immigration laws.

In a series of tweets Thursday morning, Trump accused the governments of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador of allowing a large "caravan" of migrants to proceed towards the United States unchecked, and hit out at the Democratic party for opposing his own brand of tough border control.

When troops have previously been mobilized by Trump in response to unlawful migration, their mission has been mostly passive support for border agents, like logistics and surveillance. Federal law prohibits military personnel from conducting law enforcement duties on US soil, with exceptions for military bases and related properties.

Trump has previously threatened to cut off millions of dollars in aid to Honduras, a plan he reiterated Thursday, saying he was "stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have nearly no control over their population".
