A U.S. air strike has killed 60 Islamist extremist fighters in Somalia, in one of the deadliest ever such operations against the al-Shabab organisation in the unstable eastern African country.

The US command also claimed to assess that "this airstrike did not injure or kill any civilians".

The US military said Friday's air strike occurred near the al-Shabab-controlled community of Harardere in Mudug province in the central part of the country.

The U.S. military has carried out more than two dozen airstrikes, including drone strikes, this year against the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab, the deadliest Islamic extremist group in sub-Saharan Africa. That is on pace to surpass last year's attacks against the group.

"We now assess this airstrike killed approximately 60 terrorists", US Africa Command which oversees US military operations on the continent said in a statement.

A "collective self-defense" strike on Sunday killed four al-Shabaab fighters after a US-backed local partner force came under attack near Araara, Somalia.

Last weekend marked the anniversary of al-Shabab's deadliest attack, a truck bombing in Mogadishu that killed well over 500 people.

While some observers have questioned the effectiveness of airstrikes by the USA and Kenya and raised concerns about civilians being killed, the US military maintains that they "reduce al-Shabab's ability to plot future attacks, disrupt its leadership networks and degrade its freedom of maneuver within the region".

The US military's activities in Somalia have been under scrutiny in recent months after US special forces in May were accused of complicity in a botched raid by Somali troops that left five civilians dead.

Two officials tell The Associated Press that several missiles were fired on Friday by two unmanned U.S. drones. In May 2017, a member of the Navy SEALs, Senior Chief Petty Officer Kyle Milliken, was killed and two other USA troops were wounded in a raid.

The strike came after a recent spate of attacks that Al-Shabab has conducted against Somali security forces and their USA advisers across the country.
