Who were the winners (and losers) from the Conservative Party conference?

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has showed off her dancing moves at the Tory conference

The Prime Minister did not "chuck Chequers" as former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson suggested, instead saying the party needed to "come together" behind her proposal.

She also tried to return to the message she gave when she was appointed prime minister in 2016, promising to help those who feel "left behind", many of whom voted to leave the European Union in the referendum of that year.

She said: "It's for them that we cut income tax".

She did not use the word "Chequers" - the name of her country residence where the plan was agreed by Cabinet in July - but aides insisted that this was not meant to signal any shift away from her blueprint.

May also name-checked a range of Labour politicians - including Diane Abbott, Jo Cox, Neil Kinnock and Clement Attlee - as she tried to paint the Conservatives as the home for "moderate, patriotic" voters.

Theresa May today danced onto the stage to deliver her make or break speech in a bid to unite Britain and her bitterly divided party. "It will be hard in the beginning, but the ingenuity and resilience of the british people, will help us to overcome" the trials of Brexit.

Joking about her disastrous speech a year ago - when letters fell off the set and she had a coughing fit - Mrs May quipped: 'You'll have to excuse me if I cough - I've been up all night supergluing the backdrop'. "And in so doing to believe in conservatism and to believe in Britain". But she refused to rule it out, adding: 'The resilience and ingenuity of the British people would see us through'.

Inside, the paper spoke of how Mr Johnson "plunged the knife in", and a leader column said that while the speech "pressed all the right buttons", its content was "deeply disloyal to the Prime Minister and profoundly unrealistic".

Conservative lawmaker Phillip Lee, who resigned from the justice ministry in June over the government's handling of Brexit, told a packed pro-EU event on the sidelines of the party's annual conference that the ministers had told him so in private conversations. We are entering the toughest part of the negotiations...

These are all important ways in which we're dealing day to day with the issues that make a real difference to people's lives.

The big announcements - on cancer funding, scrapping the cap on council borrowing for housebuilding and ending austerity - will prompt critics to wonder why it took so long to confirm them. You tell us, essentially, the same story - that the British are proposing unrealistic terms that they can't get.

"Because for millions of people, their auto is not a luxury". And May and the other Conservatives, I think they know they need to stick together. The June 2016 referendum on leaving the European Union exposed deep ideological divisions within the party (and, needless to say, the country as a whole) and May has struggled to unite party members, and her own Cabinet, around her Brexit proposals. As well as displaying the old Conservative spirit of self-determination, May wants to build up support for her Brexit deal.

There is belief most of Theresa May's party will support her over Brexit.

Theresa May, whose absolute majority in Parliament relies on its ally, the small party, ultra-conservative northern irish DUP, must also take into account the requirements of the latter.

Pressure on some public services has been growing since before the 2015 spending review, which has led to cash injections "when a moment of political or operational crisis was reached", she told CSW.
