Amazon responded on Monday by dropping the $25 minimum order size to qualify for the retailer's free shipping perk.

Just in time for holiday shopping, Amazon will offer free shipping on all orders arriving in time for Christmas.

Last month, Walmart added free two-day shipping for Marketplace items to its previous offer of free two-day shipping for purchases over $35. Shoppers who aren't Prime members will get slower shipping, which can take five to eight days.

If you are a Prime subscriber, Amazon says Prime Same-Day Delivery now offers more than 3 million items, which is the largest same-day selection from the company ever.

"Thanks to a healthy economy and strong consumer confidence, we believe that this holiday season will continue to reflect the growth we've seen over the past year", the group said in a statement.

Also new for this year, Amazon will be offering Black Friday customers the chance to use Augmented Reality (AR) inside its iOS and Android apps to visualise products to help work out whether a household product will fit - without a tape measure. Before, the purchase threshold was $25.

This doesn't mean the company is giving away Prime for the holidays: The announcement doesn't specify a set delivery time across all of the qualifying items, and it does mention the subscription service several times before the first paragraph has even concluded.

Amazon's shipping costs have grown rapidly in recent quarters. The company expects sales for the fourth quarter to be between $66.5 billion and $72.5 billion. The offer starts November 1 and ends December 22. The company usually sets the final date toward the end of the season.
