Welbeck has a history of serious injuries at Arsenal, having missed England's Euro 2016 campaign with a meniscus tear just months after recovering from another serious knee injury.

Sokratis started the match- as the Islington Gazette revealed three hours before the game after speaking with a well-placed source.

Meanwhile, Carl Jenkinson and Emile Smith Rowe get another opportunity to impress.

"I feel there's a good mix between discipline and freedom", added the German, who has featured in all of Arsenal's 11 Premier League matches, including the 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Saturday.

But Arsenal did secure a last-32 spot regardless, as Vorskla Poltava lost 1-0 at home to Azeri outfit Qarabag in the other Group E game.

Welbeck sustained the injury when landing heavily on his ankle after challenging for a header in the 30th minute.

It was the hosts that took the game to their opponents, and they were lucky to still be on level terms before half-time.

"But when he had the injury we needed to play with a right-back which was the reason we played with Ainsley [Maitland-Niles]".

"When we have the ball, we're all offensive players".

And while Nelson may not be a ready-made replacement for Welbeck, Emery says he is keeping a keen eye on his progress.

He required treatment on the pitch, including an oxygen mask and a leg brace, before he was taken off on a stretcher to be replaced by Aubameyang.

Aaron Ramsey of Arsenal crosses during the Europa League match at the Emirates Stadium.

Former Arsenal star, Martin Keown has singled out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for blame during the Gunners' 0-0 draw against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League on Monday.
