The condition can even lead to "excessive nose-down attitude, significant altitude loss, and possible impact with terrain", the official noted. The plane went into a sudden dive but the pilots were able to recover control and chose to fly on to Jakarta at a lower-than-normal altitude.

Indonesian authorities have downloaded information from the flight data recorder that showed a cockpit indicator on the Lion Air jet was damaged for its last four flights. The agency says it is working with Boeing and the accident investigators and "will take further appropriate actions depending on the results of the investigation".

"Boeing issued an Operations Manual Bulletin (OMB) directing operators to existing flight crew procedures to address circumstances where there is erroneous input from an AOA sensor". Another clue: the so-called angle-of-attack sensor had failed on an earlier flight and had been replaced the previous day.

The two-month-old Boeing 737 MAX 8 crashed into the sea 13 minutes after take-off from Jakarta.

The warning follows preliminary findings from the Lion Air crash that the angle-of-attack (AOA) sensor malfunctioned.

He said the pilot had landed the plane safely on that occasion. "The nose is turning itself down and they are having to fight it. They were fighting something". In total, 219 737 MAX aircraft have been delivered to airlines and leasing companies.

For a safe climb-out, the aircraft's nose is pitched up at a small angle. If the angle is too high as a plane climbs, that would cause a stall.

On Tuesday, Boeing issued a safety bulletin for airlines operating its new 737 Max airliner in the wake of the crash.

What caused the plane to crash? The full investigation could take a year.

Officials have now said that the incident will be thoroughly investigated.

The 787 Max 8 is the second Boeing aircraft to experience serious technical problems soon after its introduction, leading some analysts to question whether Boeing may have overlooked quality concerns as it strives to meet rising global demand.

The FAA grounded Boeing's entire 787 fleet in 2013 after lithium-ion batteries overheated and caught fire.

Aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas told Business Insider that Boeing has around 9,000 737s in the sky at any given time.

KNKT said it would attempt to reconstruct the jet's last flight using Boeing simulators in Seattle.

Body parts are still being recovered and searchers continue to hunt for the cockpit voice recorder.

Searchers sort through debris from the Lion Air crash. But the plane's computers will resume trying to dive as soon as they release the switch, the Boeing bulletin said. "The tariffs are pushing Boeing to start local production", Bai said. If the AOA is too low, the aircraft won't climb out fast enough.

Nick Cunningham, an aerospace analyst at Agency Partner, said these types of warnings are not unusual.

Industry insiders said that the completion of the Zhoushan plant, announced amid ongoing China-US trade frictions, reflects US companies' heavy dependence on both the supply chain in China as well as the country's huge market.

While modern jetliners primarily operate on autopilot, the computerized system can disengage when airspeed indicators malfunction, forcing pilots to manually fly the aircraft.
