CNN Reporter Jim Acosta Berated By Donald Trump & Suspended From White House

Trump blows up at Jim Acosta

The White House war on the press took a new turn with the banning of a CNN reporter, marking a tense new phase in the long-running battle between President Donald Trump and his chief media antagonist.

CNN's Jim Acosta pushed a White House intern's arm during a press conference Wednesday and then lied about it. "This conduct is absolutely unacceptable", is, however, the explanation given by Sanders. It is also completely disrespectful to the reporter's colleagues not to allow them an opportunity to ask a question.

During the news conference, President Trump said Republicans "defied history" to make Senate gains in the U.S. midterms.

Hours after a harsh on-air confrontation between the President of the United States and Jim Acosta, the CNN reporter has been "suspended" from the White House "until further notice".

The intern attempted to grab the microphone from Mr Acosta, who nevertheless tried to shout out one last question. That's the moment that Sanders referred to in her tweet explaining why Acosta had been barred.

"CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them", he added. "You are a rude, bad person", Trump added.

In a later tweet, Sanders said the White House stood by its decision.

"Pardon me, ma'am", he said.

"We will not tolerate the inappropriate behaviour clearly documented in this video", Sanders said, posting a video of the CNN reporter allegedly placing his hand on a young woman. "You shouldn't be working for CNN", Trump said to Acosta.

"Mr. President are you anxious about indictments coming down in this investigation?"

"A free press is vital to democracy, and we stand behind Jim Acosta and his fellow journalists everywhere".

Looking back at Acosta, Trump added: "The way you treat [press secretary] Sarah Huckabee is disgusting, and the way you treat other people is terrible".

Acosta said he learned that his access was withdrawn from a text message on his phone. Some frames look to be sped up and others slowed down to make Acosta's physical actions seem far more aggressive than they were in reality - as can be seen in numerous videos captured by the news outlets in the room.

Craig Aaron of the activist group Free Press called Trump's actions "a direct and unsafe attack on the public's rights to hold their leaders accountable" and called for "a unified stand" by the press corps.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that CNN is "fake news" and incited his followers to chant the phrase at representatives of the news organization during his campaign rallies.

White House staffers decide whether journalists are eligible, though the Secret Service determines whether their applications are approved.

When NBC reporter Peter Alexander took the mic for the next question, he defended Mr Acosta as a "diligent reporter" - earning Mr Trump's ire.
