Dead-Balling Shiva Singh’s 360 Delivery Curbs Bowlers’ Innovation

Watch: Left-arm spinner Shiva Singh's 360-degree turn that left Bishan Singh Bedi stunned

Left-arm spinner Singh ran up to the crease normally in the Indian under-23 match before performing the move in his delivery stride in an apparent attempt to put the batsman off.

There are two laws according to which an umpire can call a ball dead.

The incident took place on the third day of a CK Nayudu Trophy match between Bengal and Uttar Pradesh in Kalyani.

The argument for and against the technique comes with interpretation of the game's law, which states; "Either umpire shall call and signal Dead ball when ... there is an instance of a deliberate attempt to distract under either of Laws 41.4 (Deliberate attempt to distract striker) or 41.5 (Deliberate distraction, deception or obstruction of batsman)".

Shiva Singh is in the news for his unmatched bowling action, and it is about "spinning" himself 360 degrees just before his delivery.

Shiva has claimed that this was not the first time he had bowled in the 360-degree style but it was definitely the first time that umpire called it a dead ball.

However, even before Shiva had completed his delivery, umpire Vinod Seshan signalled dead ball, much to the frustration of the bowler.

The MCC, the custodian of the rules of cricket, weighed in with a post on its laws blog, referring to rule 41 which deals with unfair play.

The MCC, custodian of the game, had to jump into the debate to explain the scope of the law under which Shiva's delivery was dead-balled.

But former England captain Michael Vaughan posted saying he saw nothing wrong with delivery.

"Firstly, the Laws don't dictate what a bowler's run-up should look like". Batsmen always go for the reverse-sweep or the switch-hit against bowlers.

"The law only states if an offence is made to distract the batsman, rather than the batter actually getting distracted". However, what must be noted here is that bowler did not switch his bowling arm.
