Elon Musk '70% sure he will move to Mars'

Musk says there is a seventy per cent chance he will get to Mars in his lifetime. Just maybe not back again

Elon musk has declared that there is a "70 per cent chance" he will personally visit Mars within his lifetime despite a "good chance" of death.

While the trip to Mars seems like a near possibility (with the new SpaceX's Starship, formerly called BFR), it definitely will cost a couple of hundred thousand dollars. "I'm talking about moving there", he added. At one point, Musk revisited the long days he spent on the Tesla assembly line as the company worked on building more Model 3s, saying that "I just did it because if I didn't do it, then [there was a] good chance Tesla would die".

Musk, who founded PayPal and runs auto firm Tesla, hopes to visit Mars using technology built by his space company SpaceX.

Starship is also set to fly a private passenger - Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa - to Moon and is scheduled to start in 2023.

Musk, who has had a hard year as his erratic behaviour has fuelled social media storms and fluctuations in the share prices of his companies, said he knew travelling to Mars could prove fatal. "Now, does that sound like an escape hatch for rich people?"

There will, he said, be "not much time for leisure". And even after doing all this, it's a very harsh environment.

Elon Musk also suggested that the ad for a voyage to Mars would most likely be "Shackleton's ad for going to the Antarctic", hinting at the difficulties involved in the process.

Forward-looking: People like to climb mountains for the challenge. In 2012, Musk shared plans to build an 80,000-person colony on the Red Planet and has continually worked to advance SpaceX's rocket technology to one day make interplanetary travel a reality.

Musk is featured alongside Christian evangelist Franklin Graham and Microsoft founder and advocate Bill Gates in the fourth installment of Axios' limited documentary series.
