Google Workers Stage Walkout in NYC Over Company's Sexual Misconduct Policies

Hundreds of employees walked out of Google's European headquarters in Dublin on Thursday as part of a global campaign over the U.S. tech giant's handling of sexual harassment that saw similar protests in London and Singapore.

Hundreds of workers filed out of its European headquarters in Dublin shortly after 1100 local time, while organisers shared photographs on social media of hundreds more leaving Google offices in London, Zurich, Berlin, Tokyo and Singapore.

On October 25, New York Times alleged that in 2014, Andy Rubin, the creator of Android, was given a "hero's farewell" despite being accused of sexual harassment. Per the NYT story, Rubin had multiple relationships with Google employees and "coerced" oral sex from an employee in 2013 - a claim that the company investigated and found credible. Rubin has denied parts of the Times story.

"We want to assure you that we review every single complaint about sexual harassment or inappropriate conduct, we investigate and we take action", said Pichai.

The story also outlines a culture of sexual harassment and gender discrimination at the company.

Mr DeVaul had remained at the "X" lab after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced about him a few years ago, but he resigned on Tuesday without severance, Google confirmed on Wednesday. In March, employees protested the company's planned partnership with the Pentagon's Project Maven, and many took issue with its plan to build a censored version of Google to please the Chinese government.

But employees were not placated, and issued a list of demands during the Thursday walkout.

Among other things, Pichai and Naughton disclosed that Google had fired 48 employees, including 13 senior managers, for "sexual harassment" in recent years without giving any of them severance packages.

They're calling for an end to pay inequality, sexual assault transparency, an across-the-board reporting policy for sexual misconduct, a diversity officer, and an employee to be included on the board.

"Although it's not necessarily something that's happened to me, I understand that this is something that is real and has impacted so many lives", said associate account strategist Brandon McGhee.

The New York Times reported DeVaul invited a job candidate to the Burning Man festival and asked her to remove her shirt so he could give her a back rub in 2013.

Staff in Google's Dublin office began the walkout at around 11 a.m. GMT.
