Reports say the suspect may have used smoke grenades and at least one weapon, described as a semi-automatic handgun by witnesses.

The deadliest attack in modern USA history came last year in Las Vegas when a 62-year-old man opened fire on a crowd of 22,000 country music concertgoersfrom the 32nd floor of a nearby hotel, killing 58 and wounding hundreds.

"The fact that he was the first in the door doesn't surprise me at all, " sheriff's Sgt Eric Buschow said Thursday. "The security guard...was down. Well, I don't want to say he was dead, but he was shot".

A neighbor told CNN that Long's mother "lived in fear" of what her son might do, saying when police were called to the house earlier this year "it took them about a half a day to get him out of the house".

The shooting, which also killed a law enforcement officer, took place at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said it was checking to see if any Israelis were among the victims.

CNN said people smashed windows with chairs to escape.

The family of Justin Meek said the 23-year-old died in the shooting, California Lutheran University said Thursday.

Dean estimated 10 to 15 people went to the area hospitals for what he expects are minor injuries.

The Borderline Bar & Grill website promoted Wednesday's country music event. The western-style bar hosts theme nights such as country, salsa and swing dancing.

On Wednesday night, a gunman dressed in black opened fire at the country dance bar in Southern California, killing Helus and 11 others. "There's a fence right there so I said, 'Everyone get over the fence as quickly as you can, ' and I followed them over".

Deputies say many people fled the bar after shots rang out.

"I screamed to him, 'There's a shooter in there!' He was kind of in disbelief, then saw that I was serious", Knapp said. The shooter fired upon the police officers when they entered the bar.

"It was chaos, people jumping out of windows, people hopping over gates to get out" Steinwender told local media.

"I just started hearing these big pops - pop, pop, pop".

Thirteen people including a sheriff's deputy and the gunman were killed in a shooting in a crowded bar late Wednesday night, reports CBS Los Angeles. It's considered one of the safest cities with a population of more than 100,000 in the country, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation crime statistics.
