Ex-Filipino First Lady Imelda Marcos faces years behind bars

The former first lady and an incumbent lawmaker known for her collection of more than 1,000 pairs of shoes was found guilty of seven counts of graft for allegedly maintaining Swiss accounts as a cabinet member during her husband's rule three decades ago.

The anti-graft Sandiganbayan court on Friday sentenced the 89-year-old to six to 11 years jail for each of the seven counts for violating an anti-corruption law when she illegally funnelled about $US200 million ($A275 million) to Swiss foundations in the 1970s.

Marcos faces arrest after the Sandiganbayan found her guilty of 7 counts of graft related to private organizations created in Switzerland while she was a government official from 1968 to 1986. Aside from this decision, she is no longer allowed to hold any position in public office.

Marcos said in a statement her lawyer is "studying the decision and he has advised us that he intends to file a motion for reconsideration". He died in self-exile in Hawaii in 1989 but his widow and children returned to the Philippines. Imelda's son Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr narrowly lost the vice-presidential election in 2016, a result he is now challenging, and many see him as the natural successor to President Duterte.

Graft is a bailable case, however, which means Marcos may be given provisional liberty while she is appealing the conviction. He indicated the family still denied that the assets had been stolen as alleged by political opponents.

Duterte has acknowledged that Imee Marcos, the couple's daughter and a provincial governor, backed his presidential candidacy.
