Indictments? Final report? White House braces for Mueller

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions Says Resigning At Trump's Request

Congress now has a "hell of a lot" more resources now than it did Monday if the Trump administration and newly named acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker move to end special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, Rep. Eric Swalwell said Thursday.

Mitt Romney, the Republican Party's 2012 presidential nominee who won the Utah race on Tuesday to become a United States senator, also said Mueller's probe should not be affected by Sessions' dismissal.

Trump blamed the recusal for the appointment of Mueller, who took over the Russian Federation investigation two months later and began examining whether Trump's hectoring of Sessions was part of a broader effort to obstruct the probe. Whitaker did, however, believe that Sessions had no choice but to recuse himself from the matter, the person said.

Sessions was the first casualty of a cabinet shakeup that had been expected from Trump following the midterm elections. "There's no collusion", Trump said on Wednesday.

Laurence Tribe, a constitutional law professor at Harvard University, said Trump's replacement of Sessions with Whitaker was arguably an impeachable offense in itself.

"It's very significant because Whitaker's position on indictments or future indictments may be different than Rosenstein's, and Rosenstein had given Mueller a broad mandate to pursue various crimes", said Washington criminal defense lawyer Jeffrey Jacobovitz.

They were organized by Move On advocacy group, who wrote in a statement announcing the marches: "Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special counsel's Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation".

While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Conway explained President Trump is not planning to use the resignation as a way to shut down the Mueller probe.

'Nor has a President ever before appointed an acting attorney general who is on record describing the means by which the President could curtail an ongoing investigation of the President's conduct'.

At a protest in support of Mueller outside the White House, a crowd of several hundred protesters shouted anti-Trump slogans.

Critics worry Whitaker may be unlikely or unwilling to defend the investigation, given his history of partisanship and loyalty to Trump.

Sessions had recused himself from the investigation, because of his own contacts with Russians during the 2016 campaign, instead handing responsibility for Mueller to his deputy Rod Rosenstein.

With Democrats grabbing control of the House of Representatives, Nadler will become the chairman of the Judiciary Committee - and could preside over impeachment proceedings against Trump. The president may also decide to instruct Mr Whitaker to fire the entire Mueller team - something Mr Trump says he has the power to do. "Cox clashed with the White House over Nixon's refusal to release Oval Office recordings, some of which implicated the president in the (Watergate hotel) break-in".

Nevertheless he appealed to Republicans not "beholden" to Donald Trump to reign in any attempt to fire Mueller.
