Midterm elections: Donald Trump responds to House and Senate results

Tuesday's vote was the first nationwide election since the 2016 presidential elections, during which Trump beat Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republicans gained majorities in both the House and Senate.

The main question to be answered during the current midterm elections is whether the Republicans will cede their control over the House of Representatives to the Democrats.

But White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders minimized the magnitude of likely Democratic gains.

Republican Whip Steve Scalise said the president's rallies were building momentum and with the economy a selling point, he predicted his party would retain a slim majority. Democratic favorite Conor Lamb stunned Washington by winning a special election in the state and faced Republican Rep. Keith Rothfus in a new district that was among four that could flip from red to blue. "If you want more caravans, if you want more crime, vote Democrat tomorrow".

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who may be selected to once again become Speaker of the House, has downplayed talk of impeaching either man, but conservatives have argued those assurances were merely meant to hide Democrats' true intentions so as not to provoke more Republican voter turnout. Sanders said he would continue making calls Wednesday.

What's happening in Senate races?

The 2018 midterm elections will determine whether Democrats or Republicans control Congress. And other red state Senate Democrats running for re-election - Claire McCaskill in Missouri and Joe Donnelly in IN - did the same. Claire McCaskill. Ohio is around the same as Missouri, 51% approval in the state.

Since 1946, the president's party has lost an average of 25 House seats in midterm elections, according to Gallup.

The party were most optimistic about the House, a sprawling battlefield set largely in America's suburbs where more educated and affluent voters in both parties have soured on Mr Trump's turbulent presidency, despite the strength of the national economy.

"Democrats now have subpoena power, and if you don't believe me, Trump was just photographed trying to sneak 20 years of tax returns out of the White House".

But the majority said he was a factor - with about one-third of them saying their vote was to support Trump and another one-third saying they voted to express opposition to the president.

Republicans now have majorities in both chambers of Congress, but polls show that the Democrats are poised to capture the House of Representatives. In Kansas, Republican Kris Kobach, a Trump ally who was a leader of the president's disbanded voter fraud commission, fell to Democratic state senator Laura Kelly.

Millions of Americans voted Tuesday, and results have been projected in several races in the United States midterms, the critical first nationwide election seen as a referendum on Donald Trump's presidency.

Polls have closed across the East Coast, but the results in some of the most closely watched races remain too close to call.

Critics, including the Democrats, accused Trump of employing racist and xenophobic rhetoric that incited violence, a charge he and many of his fellow Republicans rejected. The House was also getting its first two Muslim women, MA elected its first black congresswoman, and Tennessee got its first female senator.

Here's a snapshot of who voted and why in IN, based on preliminary results from AP VoteCast, an innovative nationwide survey of about 138,000 voters and nonvoters - including 3,937 voters and 765 nonvoters in the state of in - conducted for The Associated Press by NORC at the University of Chicago. He served as vice chairman of Trump's now-defunct commission on voter fraud. She stressed the president's efforts to mobilize GOP voters in a ground game aimed at "defying midterm history".

Early vote data released early Tuesday indicated that the electorate was younger and more diverse than in the last midterm election. In the final days, he sought to motivate supporters with the battle over the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
