The invitation is fuelling speculation that Doria - who is now based in Los Angeles - may remain in London for the duration of Meghan's first pregnancy.

She took her stroll in a pair of comfy trainers and kept her essentials in a bright red saddle bag.

The invitation would would break with royal precedent.

When the royal baby news was revealed in October, the grandmother-to-be was said to be "very happy about the lovely news" and looking forward "to welcoming her first grandchild", according to a statement from Kensington Palace.

A source added: "She has never been asked to join the royal household for Christmas, and she would love to be regarded as part of the royal family".

Ms Ragland, 62, impressed senior royals including the Queen with her shy and gentle nature displayed at her daughter's royal wedding and during Meghan's first solo project when she launched the cookbook "Together".

In contrast, Kate Middleton's parents have also been guests at the Sandringham Christmas morning church service but typically stay with their daughter and Prince William at their nearby home nearby, instead.

The source is reported to have said that the Queen's invitation showed respect and acknowledged that Meghan would be spending Christmas away from family in Britain.

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace declined to comment.

Mr Markle pulled out because of health problems just days before she was due to walk down the aisle and admitted he had staged paparazzi pictures.

Doria won widespread praise for her dignity at the royal wedding following weeks of family drama surrounding Meghan's father, Thomas Markle.
