Republicans might lose House of majority in the U.S. elections

US midterms Key factors of the 2018 elections

In the Miami area, former Clinton administration Cabinet member Donna Shalala defeated television journalist Maria Elvira Salazar in a costly, roller-coaster contest.

"The contrast in this election could not be more clear".

Voters were on track to send at least 99 women to the House, shattering the record of 84 now.

"Democrats had a narrow path through the suburbs in districts won by Hillary Clinton, and it appears they were able to flip those seats despite strong performances from our candidates who consistently outperformed the top of the ticket in almost every race", Daudt said in a statement.

Trump's team immediately sought to give him credit for retaining their narrow Senate majority, even as their foothold in the more competitive House battlefield appeared to be slipping. It would also nearly certainly bring an onslaught of investigations of his businesses and his administration.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., boldly predicted that Democrats will win back the House. Individual races "will be close", she said, but because of the "quality of our candidates" and emphasis on preserving health care, "I feel confident we will win".

Democrats also had history on their side: 2002 was the only midterm election in the past three decades when the party holding the White House gained Senate seats.

"We have the beginning of a new Democratic Party, younger, browner, cooler, more women, more veterans, can win in MI, can win in Pennsylvania, can win in OH", said Van Jones, a CNN political commentator. And they would claim subpoena power to investigate Trump's personal and professional shortcomings. He predicted an "invasion" from the migrant caravan making its way toward the US and decried the "radical" agenda of speaker-in-waiting Pelosi.

Still, he celebrated GOP success in expanding the party's majority in the Senate and seemed to blame losing candidates for distancing themselves from him and his unorthodox methods.

However, even some Republicans became jittery after a Florida man and ardent Trump supporter was charged with sending homemade bombs to more than a dozen senior Democrats and other high-profile opponents of Mr Trump.

The results, Trump argued, were proof of his ability to turn out voters.

Republicans are increasingly confident they will retain control of the Senate, but they face Democratic headwinds in the House. It was a deliberate strategy to expand the playing field to about 80 districts, stretching beyond college-educated voters in the suburbs into regions where the party has seen its fortunes fade.

The Republican Party maintained control of the Senate. Hundreds of millions were spent by the parties, supplemented by more money from outside groups, to frame the debate.

As for Trump, a Democratic-controlled Congress, like a Democratic House, would become his target and scapegoat, leading to more attempts to bypass the legislative branch with executive actions and orders.

Trump had aggressively campaigned in the closing days of the race, his focus on boosting Republicans in states he carried in 2016.

VIRGINIA: The state slogan may be "Virginia is for lovers", but there's no love lost here between Republicans and Democrats, who are eyeing a number of districts as ripe for the taking - most notably that of Rep. Barbara Comstock, a Trump ally who is trying to fend off a strong challenger in Democrat Jennifer Wexton.

Many people have already voted.

Karen Handel faced a strong challenge from Lucy McBath, whose 17-year-old son was shot and killed at a gas station.

The GOP's hold on the majority was complicated by an unusually large number of retirements as well as persistent infighting between conservatives and centrists, with much of the conflict centered on the question of allegiance to Trump.

The S&P 500 has risen 28 percent since Trump's election in November 2016 to the eve of congressional midterm elections on Tuesday.

Trump also touted a booming US economy that continues to pump out jobs and raise average wages But his economic arguments were overshadowed by those appealing to nativist sentiments, such as a promise to end the right of anyone born in the States to citizenship.

Four GOP seats in Orange County, including two where the incumbent Republicans retired, were in play, along with three other seats to the north beyond Los Angeles and into the Central Valley. Harris was facing a stiff challenge from Marine veteran and small-businessman Dan McCready.

Mr Trump encouraged voters to view the first nationwide election of his presidency as a referendum on his leadership, pointing proudly to the surging economy at recent rallies.

With opinion polls showing dozens of tight United States congressional and gubernatorial races, the current and former USA leaders said the results would determine what kind of country Americans live in for the next two years.

Democrats also failed to capitalize on potential gains in Texas, where Sen.

The GOP campaign committee distanced itself from eight-term Rep. Steve King of Iowa after he was accused of racism and anti-Semitism, but he won anyway. You know we're just starting to bring manufacturing jobs back to America.
