The Midterm Results Are In and This is What They Mean

Pelosi said Democrats will make their top campaign issue - healthcare - a priority.

The Democrats seized control of the House in Tuesdays' pivotal midterm elections.

With the Democrats in the majority they will have the power to launch investigations and subpoena records, including possibly Trump's tax filings and private business dealings.

Properly considered, this was a stark rebuke of the Republican Party and President Trump, which had pushed nearly all their political chips onto the bigotry square over the last few weeks. "Those that did not, say goodbye!" he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

Trump, though, showed an early interest in working with her, charmed at times by her deal-making prowess.

The news for the next year or longer seems likely to be dominated by a steady stream of coverage of the people closest to Trump as they testify before Congress under duress, or under a grant of immunity, or coverage of their refusal to speak at all for fear of incriminating themselves.

Trump, 72, had hardened his rhetoric in recent weeks on issues that appealed to his conservative core supporters.

"When it goes south - and it will, and it's going to happen quickly - she is the flawless person for him to pin all this blame upon", Kennedy said. Considering this statement ignores how the Republican Party acted when President Barack Obama was in office (remember the fifty-plus attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act or how they stole a Supreme Court seat by not confirming Merrick Garland?) it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Financial markets often favor Washington gridlock because it preserves the status quo and reduces uncertainty, even though many in the market this time around had been hoping for a continuation of the Republican agenda. "These people helped create finally a divided government - and a check on the president".

Rep. Elijah Cummings, the Maryland Democrat poised to take charge of the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement to The Associated Press that he intends to use the panel as "a check on the executive branch - not merely for potential criminal violations, but for much broader concerns, such as conflicts of interest, emoluments violations and waste, fraud and abuse".

Democratic candidates also triumphed in Illinois, Maine, New Mexico and Nevada, where Republicans had held the governorships.

"Democrats will lower healthcare costs and prescription drug prices for seniors and families across America", Pelosi vowed.

"I don't think there's a basis for doing that right now", Biden said. "It's very hard to rule out the idea that foreign policy decisions are not being kept separate from business interests".

Every seat in the House was up for grabs on Tuesday.

On the other hand, Republicans gained seats in the Senate, where their margin of control in the current Congress has been a single seat.

Democratic senators Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota lost their races, while Republican representative Marsha Blackburn became the first woman elected to the US Senate from Tennessee.

The House majority will be narrow, and some tension surrounds its choice of a speaker and other officers. We will fill in the gaps on the Russian investigations.

Turnout broke records for midterm elections in Midwestern battlegrounds such as Wisconsin and Iowa, though with conflicting results.

Moscow denies meddling and Trump denies any collusion.

The tax law was particularly problematic for Republicans in high-tax New Jersey, where at least three GOP-held seats flipped.

When Cummings and other Democrats asked previous year for records detailing Trump's separation from his businesses, they received an eight-page glossy pamphlet and a single email.

The Democratic gains were fueled by women, young and Hispanic voters, a Reuters/Ipsos Election Day poll found. Fifty-five percent of women said they backed a Democrat for the House this year, compared to 49 percent in the 2014 midterm congressional election.

Texas, which has never sent a Hispanic woman to Congress, elected two Tuesday night: Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia, both Democrats.

In Michigan, Democrat Gretchen Whitmer turned back Republican Bill Schuette in the contest to replace Republican Governor Rick Snyder, who could not run again due to term limits.

Democrats lost governor's races in Florida and Iowa that party operatives were feeling bullish about.

In Colorado, Democrat Jared Polis became the first openly gay man to be elected governor of a USA state.
