The 76ers Trade for Jimmy Butler; Now Serious Threats to Win the East

He sat out the Timberwolves' game against the Jazz on Wednesday with no guarantee he would play for Minnesota again, The Athletic reported at the time.

A person with knowledge of the situation said Saturday that Butler is being traded to the 76ers in a package that will send Dario Saric and Robert Covington to the Timberwolves.

As I wrote in October, the 76ers needed to be aggressive in Butler trade talks as he reportedly had "eyes for them". Justin Patton, who was selected with the No. 16 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, is also included in the deal. He remains one of the league's top two-way players and should immediately join Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons to help turn the Sixers into even more of an Eastern Conference contender.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the trade.

The 76ers were scheduled to enter 2019 with enough cap space to sign a max free agent. Minnesota just finished an 0-5 road trip with a loss in Sacramento on Friday night and is 4-9 overall - winless in eight games on the road. The team called it general soreness at the time, but Butler did not suit up again for the Timberwolves.

Butler has two years remaining on the five-year, $92 million deal he signed with the Bulls in 2015. Richardson, on the other hand, has already taken a massive leap on this young season and is now averaging 20.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

Philadelphia will become Butler's third team, after Chicago and Minnesota.
