Cesar Sayoc, a former male stripper, pizza delivery driver and disc jockey who lived in a white van festooned with right-wing political images supporting Trump and lambasting his critics, faces a maximum penalty of 48 years in prison.

He faces charges for allegedly mailing more than a dozen explosive devices to prominent Democrats, CNN and critics of Donald Trump, including billionaire financier and philanthropist George Soros.

As U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Lehrburger asked Sayoc routine questions, he remained soft-spoken and polite.

The 56-year-old was recently extradited to NY from Florida, where he was arrested October 26 at an auto parts store.

He was arrested last month and charged with interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and certain other persons, threatening interstate communications and assaulting current and former federal officers.

Accused mail bomber Cesar Sayoc is set to appear in Manhattan federal court Tuesday, prosecutors said.

Madeline Sayoc, in a letter sent by her attorney to ABC News, described being "shocked" and "confused" when she awoke from surgery last week and was told her 56-year-old son was accused of the attacks.

Packages were sent to Barack and Michelle Obama's Washington, DC, home and to Hillary Clinton at her upstate NY home in Chappaqua that the former secretary of state and presidential candidate shares with her husband, former president Bill Clinton. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., former CIA Director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Sayoc's lawyers have found it in his best interest to have the hearing in NY instead of staying in Miami. Cory Booker. Packages were also mailed to CNN in NY and Atlanta.

None of the devices exploded before being intercepted and no one was hurt.

Prosecutors say the most recent crude bomb was recovered on Friday in California, addressed to liberal activist Tom Steyer.

"Although the Government's investigation is ongoing, the evidence gathered to date demonstrates the dangerousness of the defendant and creates significant incentives for him to flee", prosecutors wrote.
