Women in Congress breaks record with 2018 midterm elections

More women ran in congressional primaries this year than ever before, mostly as Democrats. With the win, Rojas said, the progressive movement challenging the establishment of the Democratic Party has shown it "can unseat Democrats who are ideologically and demographically out-of-touch with their voters and forced Democratic elected across the country to stiffen their spines".

In January, both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House will feature a far different makeup than previous years, as voter turnout surged this cycle.

Ilhan Omar, a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, is one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress and will serve Minnesota's 5th District in the House.

In victory speeches across the country, women acknowledged the groundbreaking year.

Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland picked up Congressional seats for Democrats in Kansas and New Mexico Tuesday night, making them the first Native American women elected to Congress in history.

Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams speaks to supporters and refuses to concede at her election night headquarters at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, Nov. 6, 2018.

Native American and Muslim women will join Congress for the first time alongside the youngest elected woman.

The number will nearly certainly end up being north of 100, as 14 races also remain undecided in which a woman is running against a man.

The Republican incumbent lost her bid for a second term, going down to Democrat Elwood Caudill Jr. for clerk of Rowan County in north-eastern Kentucky.

"We're kind of people that just feel like it's really important that we are focused on the gun crisis, focused on health care, focused on all those things that seem to be a divide within the United States Congress right now".

Earlier this year, she shocked many in NY politics, including herself, when she came out of nowhere to defeat 10-term Joe Crowley in New York's Democratic congressional primary.

The lopsided victory for Ocasio-Cortez is hardly a surprise, given the deep blue nature of her Brooklyn district.

She easily won Tuesday against a Republican in the heavily Democratic and ethnically diverse district straddling Queens and The Bronx.

Among them was New York Democratic congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who at 29 becomes the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, taking 78 percent of the vote.

The five-time congressman ran against Colorado's Republican state Treasurer Walker Stapleton to succeed Gov. John Hickenlooper, a popular Democrat who can't be re-elected because of term limits.

In defeating Democrat Phil Bredesen, GOP Rep. Marsha Blackburn will become Tennessee's first woman senator, MA sent the state's first black woman to Congress in Democrat Ayanna Pressley and Texas elected their first two Latinas to Congress, sending Democrats Veronica Escobar of El Paso and Sylvia Garcia of Houston to the House. Davids, a lawyer who will also be Kansas' first openly gay member of Congress, defeated incumbent Republican Kevin Yoder by nine points in a state that was handily won by Trump in 2016.
