Injuries reported after jetway collapses at Baltimore airport

Four medics, two Southwest employees, and the sick passenger were injured when the jet bridge collapsed, causing them to fall from the ramp, while the passenger was being removed from the plane.

Six people were injured after part of a jetway collapsed at the Baltimore-Washington International Airport in Maryland on Saturday night.

Six were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to BWI spokesman Jonathan Dean.

Southwest Airlines said the flight arrived at BWI from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with a request for paramedics to meet it to check out a passenger's "onboard medical situation".

"While medical personnel were assisting that passenger outside the aircraft, the airport-owned passenger loading bridge experienced a failure", the spokesperson said. BWI Fire and Rescue crews responded along with mutual aid.

The bridge will remain closed until the investigation is over, the tweet said.

The rest of the passengers used the plane's staircase to exit.

"Our passengers' safety is the top priority and BWI Marshall Airport has moved quickly to address this issue", Rahn said.

No other operations at the airport were affected, BWI said.
