A United States father's message about bullying has gone viral after he made his daughter walk 8km to school as punishment for bullying other students.

Cox explained that his daughter was recently kicked off the school bus for the second time this school year for bullying another student, so he decided to make her walk 5 miles to school to teach her a lesson.

The five-mile walk to school was broken up over Kirsten's three-day suspension. You are doing the right thing and teaching her a lesson and yet you are following her to also make sure she is safe while walking. But he remained in their heated auto, driving slowly behind her on Tuesday as she was ordered to walk along the side of the OH roadway for eight kilometres in 2-degree Celsius weather.

The video has been shared more than 340,000 times as of Thursday morning.

His daughter, Kirsten, says she's learned her lesson, especially since she knows how it feels when people aren't nice.

After Matt Cox of Swanton, Ohio, found out that his daughter was suspended from her school bus for bullying another student for the second time, he told her he wouldn't be driving her to school.

Mr Cox added that many children feel entitled to privileges like being taken to school in the morning by vehicle or bus.

"Sometimes being a good parent is hard, much harder to take the time and effort to raise them right than not to do", writes one Facebook user.

But others said his actions teach the wrong kind of lesson.

"I just want the kids to know that words truly do hurt; they cut very deep and have lasting effects", Matt told OH news station WTVG.

Cox told WTVG he thinks the video has made a difference, so he'd do the same thing again.

Cox says he's received a lot of support from other parents, though some expressed anger and concern over his decision.

They "seem to show a great deal of empathy towards some of the sad stories that I read with them", Mr Cox said.

"Parents need to hold their kids accountable", Cox said.
