California officer's killing reignites sanctuary law fight

Manhunt intensifies for illegal alien accused of killing Calif. police officer

Newman Police Cpl. Ronil Singh.

The sheriff said Perez Arriaga has gang affiliations and multiple Facebook pages with different names.

Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said the suspect was identified on Thursday and was living in the US illegally, USA Today reported.

Christianson said the case highlighted the dangers of a California law passed in 2017 that placed limits on how closely law enforcement can cooperate with federal agents seeking to deport illegal immigrants arrested for crimes. "No, we shouldn't politicize it, but we have to have a conversation about restrictive legislation that puts our communities at risk".

Christianson called for stricter laws at a news conference as Singh's brother wept beside him.

Christianson explained that Arriaga illegally crossed the border into Arizona "some time ago".

During the conference, Christianson took aim at California's sanctuary laws, stating that the suspect was an illegal immigrant from Mexico who has claimed to be involved with a criminal gang called the Surenos.

President Donald Trump, whose demand that Congress approve $5 billion for a USA southern border wall has led to a partial government shutdown, tweeted Thursday about Singh's killing, ending with: "Time to get tough on Border Security".

After Thursday's press conference, President Trump weighed in on the manhunt on Twitter, using it to back his argument for the border wall, which many experts agree is not an effective deterrent for migrants looking to enter the U.S.

The sheriff leading the investigation into the shooting death of a California police officer took aim at so-called sanctuary laws that limit cooperation with US immigration authorities.

Gov. Jerry Brown has said the law strikes a balance between protecting families and ensuring consequences for serious criminals.

Christianson has been an outspoken critic of sanctuary policies and sat next to President Donald Trump during a White House meeting on immigration and sanctuary laws earlier this year.

Law enforcement officials arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting a Central California police officer after a three-day manhunt, the Stanislaus County sheriff announced Friday.

SB 54 bars law enforcement from detaining a person due to a hold request, responding to federal immigration enforcement's requests for notification or providing information about a person's release date unless that's already available publicly.

De Leon also told KNX-AM radio in Los Angeles that the sheriff was politicizing a tragedy and actually harming police work.

Authorities have arrested seven other people, including Perez Arriaga's brothers, 25-year-old Adrian Virgen and 34-year-old Conrado Virgen Mendoza; his girlfriend, 30-year-old Ana Leyde Cervantes; and a co-worker, 27-year-old Erik Razo Quiroz, authorities said. Several Hispanic individuals, including two of Arriaga's brothers, were also arrested Friday for allegedly aiding and abetting Arriaga as he was heading back toward the border to Mexico.

Investigators said on Friday that Arriaga was arrested at a home in Bakersfield during the execution of a search warrant.
