Neither of those outfielders produced up to expectations in 2018, however, with Fowler hitting.180/.278/.298, and Ozuna playing through a shoulder issue and hitting.280/.325/.433 with 23 home runs, a big drop from his 2017 numbers with the Marlins. The Cardinals' postseason drought is their longest since 1997-99. This is strictly a rental for the Cardinals, but the two sides could work out a contract extension before he reaches free agency following the 2019 season.

"Paul is possibly the best player in the National League", Hazen said. Goldschmidt was the Diamondbacks' franchise leader in slugging percentage and on-base percentage.

Weaver went 7-11 with a 4.95 ERA previous year with St. Louis, his third with the major league club and joins a pitching staff that combined to post a 3.72 ERA in 2018. Arizona will also receive a 2019 competitive balance Round B draft pick. They were priced out of any chance of re-signing left-hander Patrick Corbin.

Although the Diamondbacks are entering rebuilding mode, it's unlikely they'll allow Goldschmidt, 31, to leave for the Cardinals, Astros or any other team for less than market value.

But another Arizona question is whether it can trade ace right-hander Zack Greinke, a move that probably would require the Diamondbacks to eat a chunk of his formidable salary. Greinke came to the Dback after three seasons with the Dodgers.
