Chicago Bulls Fire Head Coach Fred Hoiberg After 5-19 Start

Poor record. But the entire energy about this group was different then.

Assistant coach Jim Boylen has been promoted to replace Hoiberg as head coach. Most recently on the collegiate level, he was head coach at the University of Utah, where he led the Utes to the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

But as the Bulls get ready to start December, they've decided to make a coaching change.

Last season, the first of a full rebuild following the trade of Butler to the Timberwolves, the Bulls finished 27-55 and drew widespread praise throughout the league for their competitiveness and player development. Bobby Portis (right knee) and Kris Dunn (left knee), who are expected to return within the two weeks, would've allowed Hoiberg to coach the team he had worked with this summer.

"For us to sit here and think that just because we're getting guys back, I think that would mask the problems that we've seen", Paxson said.

Boylen, who said he talked to Hoiberg on Monday morning, said he will be "forever grateful to Fred and the opportunity he gave me". And he did a lot of good things for us. "But I'm tasked with, Gar's tasked with, looking at the underlying things in the organization".

Hoiberg spent plenty of time on the hot seat in his three-plus seasons in Chicago.

Hoiberg was named Chicago's head coach in June 2015 after spending five seasons at Iowa State, where the former player was nicknamed "The Mayor". Paxson and Forman have hired Bill Cartwright, Scott Skiles, Vinny Del Negro, Tom Thibodeau and Hoiberg.

Only two other teams in the National Basketball Association have worse records. On paper, Chicago looked like a team that could have a chance to at least compete for a playoff spot in a weaker Eastern Conference, but that simply has not been the case and Hoiberg is clearly taking the blame for that, as opposed to say, the weird ill-fitting roster. The massively improved play of Zach LaVine has been one of the few bright spots for the team this year.
