Update: : More than 20 hospitalized after deadly bus crash near Benton, Ar

"On behalf of all Memphians, our hearts and prayers go out to the Orange Mound children and their families involved in this morning's tragic bus accident in Arkansas", Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said in a statement.

One child was killed in the crash.

The injured, who are reportedly mostly children, were transported to hospitals in Benton and in Little Rock, about 25 miles northeast of Benton.

Authorities say the driver of a charter bus that crashed in Arkansas, killing one child and injuring dozens of people, told authorities she lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll off the interstate. The bus was carrying the Orange Mound Youth Association's football team, which had attended an All-Star game in Dallas, Texas during the weekend. One child was reported as dying in the accident, while some 45 other people were reportedly injured in the crash. The heavily damaged bus came to a rest after tumbling down a steep embankment next to the crook of a sharp bend on an off-ramp. The bus was hoisted upright and pulled from the scene late Monday morning. Two were airlifted, Sadler said. Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock said it received more than 20 patients following the morning crash. He said the four remaining children were stable and expected to fully recover from their injuries.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

"When troopers arrived at the scene, numerous children were already off of the bus", Sadler told CNN.

The community was created after the Civil War by and for African-Americans, and black-owned businesses flourished there until desegregation enabled residents to live elsewhere.

"It helps keep kids out of trouble", said Morgan, who also played on traveling football squads in his youth.
