Apple’s iPhone XR is boosting the number of Android switchers

The lower-priced iPhone XR, the latest in Apple's current generation of iPhones, has been wooing more Android users to make the switch than previous models.

Unnamed sources familiar with the Apple / Foxconn plans have told Reuters that the most expensive Apple smartphone models, such as devices in the flagship iPhone X family, will be assembled in India as early as next year.

Specifically, the report found that 16% of new iPhone owners in November were former Android users.

The decision to move iPhone assembly to India could also help Foxconn and Apple to limit the impact of an ongoing trade war between the United States and China.

Apple now contracts Wistron Corp., another Taiwanese company, to produce the less expensive iPhone SE and iPhone 6S in Wistron's technology hub in Bengaluru in southern India.

It should be noted that it's now unknown whether Foxconn is planning to move its existing iPhone assembly from China to India.

Android fans are not really happy at the pricing system of Apple but the iPhone has a huge market that swallows its products irrespective of the price. The report further suggests that Foxconn may invest around $356 million to expand its plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.

Apple did not immediately respond to a Fortune request for comment on the report.

Leading the transition for Android users is iPhone XR, a relatively cost-effective model that debuted alongside the iPhone XS and top-of-the-line XS Max this year, according to the survey by US-based research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP).

Foxconn, the world's biggest electronics contract manufacturer, is considering setting up a factory in Vietnam, Vietnamese state media reported this month.
