Don’t worry, that big change to Instagram wasn’t permanent

Instagram Accidentally Rolls Out Horizontal Scroll Freaks Out Users

On December 27, the social media network rolled out a new app update that changed the way we view the timeline, effectively removing all aspects of the scrolling feed that we're used to. The horizontal scrolling update allowed users to browse photographs by swiping left or right, instead the usual and well-loved vertical scrolling style.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri called the move a "small test" that went "broader than they expected".

But everyone can relax.

From there, you'll be able to turn off Auto-updates for Instagram alone.

Excitement for change is rare and when it comes to social apps like Instagram, any big change is typically loathed. And had it only been the small test envisioned by Instagram, no one probably would have even heard about it. "If you're still seeing it simply restart the app", he tweeted, adding in a second tweet that the test "went to a few orders of magnitude more people than intended".

Instagram users were up in arms after the photo- and video-sharing platform dropped another seemingly unwanted and unannounced update. Safe to say, the update did not find many takers.

Regardless of Instagram's intentions this time around, the whole experience caused quite a stir, with people taking to Twitter to complain about how confusing everything had become.

The side-to-side feed scrolling feature reportedly was a mimic of the Instagram Stories.

Today, Instagram took to Twitter to apologize after reversing the update. Additionally, he said the feed in the app should be back to normal. "We apologise for any confusion".

After much backlash from the new update, Instagram reverted back to its original layout.

Users across the globe are reporting the app switched within the last hour.
