First baby born after uterus transplanted from deceased donor

The team carefully dissected the uterus from the donor before carrying out the 10-and-a-half-hour operation in September 2016 to insert the organ, which weighed 225g.

"This is a great alternative compared to live donor uterus transplants and therefore a really historic achievement", said Dr. Tullius, who is also a professor of surgery at Harvard University.

In a commentary published with the Lancet case study, two researchers suggest that as more successful uterus transplant surgeries are performed, it may be possible to expand the eligibility criteria.

Besides saving the life of patients with failed vital organs, scientists have also conducted hand or face transplants in recent years to improve a person's quality of life. In the same procedure as the live birth, the uterine was removed to curb any chance of issues with rejection.

What is a uterus transplant? On the other hand, the researchers state that transplants from deceased donors might have some benefits over donations from live donors.

The report concludes that the results establish proof-of-concept for "treating uterine infertility by transplantation from a deceased donor, opening a path to a healthy pregnancy for all women with uterine factor infertility, without the need of living donors or live donor surgery". In one case in 2011, doctors in Turkey attempted to use a dead donor's womb to carry through a pregnancy, but the expectant mother miscarried two years later, even though the graft appeared healthy. Ten days after egg implantation, the woman was confirmed to be pregnant. In this case, a cesarean section was performed for birth at 35 weeks gestation, and along with the delivery of an nearly 6 pound healthy baby girl, the uterus was also removed.

Dr. Richard Kennedy, President of the International Federation of Fertility Societies, who was not involved in the work, commented that the organization "welcomes this announcement, which is an anticipated evolution from live donors with clear advantages and the prospect of increasing supply for women with hitherto untreatable infertility".

"Up to 15 percent of couples suffer from infertility and every year thousands of women are using gestational carriers in order to conceive", said Dr. Tomer Singer, who directs reproductive endocrinology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. A total of 39 transplants have resulted in 11 live births - with the first taking place in Sweden in 2013. Within this group about one in 500 women have irreversible infertility - which can be due to a congenital malformation, cancer, or other illness, leading to genetic absence or removal of the uterus. After seven months, fertilised eggs were implanted, the BBC reported.

Both-mother and the baby were discharged three days after birth.

"The number of people willing and committed to donate organs upon their own deaths are far larger than those of live donors, offering a much wider potential donor population". The uterus is removed and immunosuppressants are stopped after birth, according to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Andraus explained it was important the donor had to be around 45 years old since it becomes harder to retrieve the uterus without complications in older women, and the donor must have given birth at least once in the past to prove her uterus was viable, he said in an interview with The Lancet, a medical journal. At the time of writing the study, the baby was 7 months old and growing normally.
