Furious Iraqi lawmakers demand USA troop withdrawal

Trump arrived in Iraq the day after Christmas having faced criticism for not visiting US troops deployed overseas

With hours left before midnight on Christmas Day, NBC News pulled the trigger on a story suggesting, falsely and without evidence, that President Donald Trump had broken with years of tradition by not visiting with US troops at Christmas.

President Donald Trump's surprise trip to Iraq may have quieted criticism at home that he had yet to visit troops in a combat zone, but it has infuriated Iraqi politicians who on Thursday demanded the withdrawal of US forces. In March, he told military families that he was handing out the first pay raise in a decade. It's been more than 10 years.

"CNN will attack anyone who supports President Trump, including the courageous men and women of our military who fight everyday to protect our freedom", she wrote.

Trump says the work of U.S. forces is complete and regional forces will ensure ISIL remains dismantled.

After campaigning on a pledge to rebuild the military, Trump secured a 10.4 percent increase in national defense spending in fiscal year 2018 ($700 billion) and another 2.3 percent in 2019 ($716 billion).

Trump, he said, had slipped into Iraq, "as though Iraq is a state of the United States". "I said, 'no, make it 10 percent - make it more than 10 percent.'" - remarks Wednesday at al-Asad base. Make it 10 percent. And we got you a big one. The 2.6% pay raise is the largest in the past 9 years. "If we see something happening with ISIS that we don't like, we can hit them so fast and so hard" that they "really won't know what the hell happened". "First time in 10 years".

Trump had told The Associated Press in October that he would visit US troops in troubled areas "at some point, but I don't think it's overly necessary".

"Arrogant" and "a violation of national sovereignty" were but a few examples of the disapproval emanating from Baghdad following Trump's meeting Wednesday with USA servicemen and women at the al-Asad Airbase. "I fought for you".

The president has made more than 7,500 false or misleading claims in his 700 or so days in office, according to The Washington Post's Fact Checker. "I can tell you that engaging in partisan political activity such as flying a Trump flag or wearing a MAGA hat, while in uniform is a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and its implementing regs", Keith said on Twitter.

The rumors even reached the White House, prompting the pool reporter to note that there was not a Marine stationed outside of the West Wing.
