Solemn public pays tribute to Bush before dawn in Rotunda

Former Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole joins mourners as former President George H.W. Bush lies in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Former President George W. Bush and his wife greeted the Trumps outside before everyone went in for the private, 20-minute visit.

Dole, 95, arrived at the Capitol Rotunda - where Bush will lie in state until Wednesday - pushed in his wheelchair by an aide.

People filed into the Capitol throughout the chilly, overcast day to pay respects to the 41st president, a son and father of privilege now celebrated by everyday citizens for his common courtesies and depth of experience.

"Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died", the message read.

As a specially-trained service dog, Sully was able to assist Bush, who was suffering from Parkinson's in his later years, by opening doors and being able to get help, should the former president have needed it.

During his four years in the White House, Bush ended the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait, steered the United States through the end of the Cold War and condemned China's 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

"I'm just here to pay my respects", said Jane Hernandez, a retired doctor.

There were chills for sure in Smithtown, where Sully was trained by America's VetDogs. On Tuesday, Sully - who's named after pilot Sully Sullenberger - sat alongside Bush's casket as it lay in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.

Bush achieved the office that Dole sought in 1996 as the Republican presidential nominee.

The late Mr Bush called Mr Trump a "blowhard".

The queen and Philip weren't the only ones who visited with and had a close relationship with George H.W. Bush.

Courts across Maryland will also be closed on Wednesday in honor of the former President.
