Google Hangouts gets hung out to dry in 2020, report says

Google is reportedly shuttting down Hangouts in 2020

Google Hangouts would follow other Google products such as Google Inbox, Google Reader, Google Wave, Google Buzz, or Google Plus that the company shut down in recent years or plans to shut down.

The news doesn't come as a surprise as Google had long ago stopped updating Google Hangouts.

It technically will still be available as part of the G Suite's Hangouts Chat for workplaces, it seems. Google also put its Allo messaging app on hold two years after its introduction.

Citing a source "familiar with the product's internal roadmap", 9to5Google reported Friday that the end of Hangouts for consumers will arrive "sometime in 2020". Since 2012, when it killed the Google Talk, the company has tried a number of messaging apps.

Though it's still unofficial, and given Google hasn't managed to launch a successful cross-platform replacement for Hangouts it's time to start checking out the competition.

Google would then decide to launch another SMS app called Messages (eventually renamed to Android Messages), which left us wondering why it would integrate SMS only to cease support just a year later.

Google has a history of shelving services that arent as popular as they once were.

In 2012, GTalk and WhatsApp were arguably evenly matched although it was clear that WhatsApp was growing while Google's app, which was available on mobile as well as desktop, was stagnant.

A spokesperson for Google didn't immediately return Gizmodo's request for comment about the report, but we'll update this post if we hear back.
