Scientists are uncertain what Anak Krakatau will do next, but it could erupt violently or stress on the rock could cause another collapse and landslide, spawning another tsunami.

The number of people evacuated after Indonesia's deadly tsunami has almost doubled to some 40,000 while more than 7,000 were injured in the disaster, officials said Friday, as they trimmed the official death toll. The eruption was one of the first global news events after telegraph lines had connected the different continents.

The tsunami displaced thousands of people from their homes.

The PVMBG said such information was vital to gauging the level of Anak Krakatau's volcanic activity, especially when the center's observers at the Pasauran post had difficulties observing the volcano because of thick fog, for instance, which could lead to inaccuracies in reporting the height of its ash column. Authorities said at least 426 people were killed and 23 missing in the disaster.

The disaster agency said the emergency period for Banten province in Java ends January 9 and on Friday for Lampung province in Sumatra.

Simultaneously, up to five kilometers, expanded the exclusion zone around the crater of the volcano.

Authorities have rerouted all flights around the erupting volcano as it spewed columns of ash into the air.

In Indonesia, increased the level of danger in connection with new eruption located on the island of Bali, mount Agung.

The tsunami was Indonesia's third major natural disaster in six months, following a series of powerful earthquakes on the island of Lombok in July and a quake-tsunami in September.

The government has warned communities in the strait to stay a kilometre away from the coastline because of the risk of another tsunami triggered by Anak Krakatau's eruptions.

This year, Indonesia has suffered its worst annual death toll form disasters in more than a decade.

Western Java is an Indonesian province on the island of Java and Sumatra is a large Indonesian island west of Java and south of the Malay Peninsula.
