Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng arrested in Vancouver, faces extradition to U.S.

Canadian authorities have arrested Huawei's chief financial officer at the request of United States law enforcement.

Meng Wanzhou, who is also the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, was arrested Saturday in Vancouver and is facing extradition to the US, Canada's Justice Department told The Globe and Mail newspaper Wednesday.

She will face a bail hearing on Friday, the spokesman for Canada's Department of Justice said. At this time, the department spokesperson can't share more details because Meng requested a publication ban. "The ban was sought by Ms. Meng", continued the statement.

The statement said that Meng was taken into custody when she was transferring flights in Canada.

The Globe and Mail reports that US law enforcement agencies allege Ms. Meng tried to evade USA trade embargoes against Iran.

The US Department of Justice is said to have been looking into Huawei's dealings with Iran for months now.

According to The Wall Street Journal, since 2016, U.S. prosecutors have been examining whether Huawei broke USA trade embargoes to Iran. American prosecutors are seeking to have her moved to the U.S. as it investigates whether the company broke trade sanctions against Iran. The reason for Meng's arrest was not immediately clear.

In a statement, Huawei said it complied with "all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU".

In June, Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper reported that USA lawmakers warned the Canadian government that Huawei posed a major cybersecurity risk. "The company believes the Canadian and USA legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion", the statement said.

The statement, which said it was to be attributed to Huawei headquarters, added that Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export and sanction laws and regulations of the United Nations, USA and European Union.

"While we lifted the ban on ZTE, the department will remain vigilant as we closely monitor ZTE's actions to ensure compliance with all United States laws and regulations", Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said at the time.

Separately, the BBC reported that British telco BT would not use Huawei's equipment in its 5G mobile network.

Although Huawei sought to distance itself from Skycom, investigative journalists found close connections between the two companies.
